Do our Extenders need Antennas?


The first thing to understand is that an extender has TWO antennas. The little antenna sticking out of the back of the device is for transmitting (and receiving) the cell signal. The closer a cell phone is to this cellular antenna the more bars appear on the phone.

Inside the extender (under the hatch cover on top toward the rear) is the GPS antenna. This antenna has NOTHING to do with the strength of the cell signal or the quality of the call. GPS is there to properly synchronize calls to live cell towers. I bring this to your attention because the folks who sell aftermarket external GPS antennas occasionally will lead consumers to believe that their extender will work better and you will “get more out of your extender” if you buy an external GPS antenna. Poppycock. Very simply, if the GPS LED is solid blue you don’t need another GPS antenna. Repeat, if the GPS LED is blue you are good to go. See below if your GPS LED is red. In that case you may or may not need an external GPS antenna.

With that question hopefully settled what remains is; do you need a different cellular antenna? There are indeed aftermarket cellular antennas that can a) increase the range of your extender, and b) focus the signal in a specific area. The stock cell antenna is omnidirectional or just “omni”, meaning it covers a full 360 degree area. Replacement antennas may be omni as well or be directional to cover a specific area. Just remember in all these examples that unlike WiFi, you can’t password protect your extender! It’s open to whoever the signal reaches to.

Using a lightning surge protector in most cases is always recommended, particularly if the kit is going be installed in an area with frequent lightning. The lightning surge protector should be installed in line with the cable and near the amplifier, and should be properly grounded.

The outside antenna is positioned high on your building, made of metal and exposed to the elements – very attractive to lightning! Thus placing the surge protector between the outside antenna and the amplifier unit is advised in order to protect the amplifier.

The SC-288W Omni Outdoor Antenna has 4dB gain. Omni antennas receive and send signals in a 360º radius. They can receive signals from multiple cell towers and is best for boosting signal on many different carriers. They are excellent in most situations where the existing outside signal strength is moderate to strong.

The SC-230W-S Yagi Outdoor Antenna has up to 5dB of gain. It is a directional antenna which can reach cell towers up to 30 miles away. It needs to be set up pointing in the direction towards the cell tower, and because it is directional it will only pick up signal in that direction. It’s very powerful at picking up weak signal in one particular direction.

The SC-222W Omni Dome Antenna is a multi-band omni-directional plastic dome antenna that gathers signals from all sides. It has 6dB gain and is designed for central locations with 360º coverage. The antenna range is dependent on three prime factors:

3) Reception from outside signal received and distributed by the outside antenna.

Are ANTENNAS the Supreme Segment of Cell Signalling Boosters??

 With any external antenna, it becomes a necessity to remember about its exposure to Mother Nature that can be pretty tough on the equipment. In particular, antennas are susceptible to lighting strikes as they are made of metal and have some level of electricity flowing through them. Another thing to consider is wind. There are two different types of external antennas that one will encounter when deciding on a cell phone signal booster omni-directional and yagi -directional.

Omni-directional antennas are particularly designed to send and receive signal in all directions, so that one is able to reach multiple cell phone towers at the same time and boost cell phone signal for multiple providers. Omni antennas are best suited for circumstances where one needs to support multiple cell phone carriers, each with their own cell tower, and are already receiving at least three bars of signal outside of the house or workplace. It then becomes easier for the Omni antenna to pick up the signal from each of the carriers which is then supplied to the amplifier. This will thus boost the signal inside our home or office.

 Yagi antennas on the other hand are designed to send and receive signal in a specific direction. On placing an external antenna in an area which has weak signal, and when we have only one cell provider that we are looking to boost the signal for, then a yagi antenna proves right for our use.

Similarly there are two types of internal antennas – Dome and Panel antennas.

Panel antennas are designed to podcast and receive signal in only one specific direction and they are proved to be the best suited for either long, rectangular spaces or multiple floors in a building. They can be either mounted on the wall facing down a space or mounted facing downwards at the top of a space and broadcast down and out through multiple floors.

Dome antennas on the other hand are designed to cover one floor with signal in all directions and they are meant to be mounted on the ceiling at the centre of the space in order to broadcast and receive signal equally in all directions. They are not advisable to be used for multiple floors of coverage.
